STEPS
1
DETERMINE THE STATUS OF YOUR CURRENT T-MOBILE DEVICE. As long as you are out of your T-Mobile contract or are willing to pay the early contract termination fees associated with your T-Mobile agreement, unlocking a T-Mobile phone is pretty easy. 2
REACH OUT TO T-MOBILE AND ASK THEM TO PROVIDE THE APPROPRIATE UNLOCK CODE TO ELIGIBLE CUSTOMERS. Eligibility requirements include having had an active T-Mobile account for a minimum of 60 days and having either a prepaid plan account balance of at least $10.00 or a prior refill within the last 30 days. 3
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR UNLOCKED PHONE. An unlocked phone offers several advantages. Depending on the flexibility you need with your phone and plan, unlocking your phone will give you the convenience of keeping your phone while finding a network that better suits your needs. 4
CHECK OUT A PREPAID CARRIER WITH A BRING YOUR OWN PHONE (BYOP) PROGRAM. One of the primary reasons people unlock their phones is to lower monthly cell phone costs by switching to a prepaid carrier. Because many of the larger prepaid providers, such as Straight Talk, use post-paid providers’ towers, many people are happy to lower their bills while keeping the same network coverage offered by the major post-paid providers. A BYOP plan is critical because it allows you to use your T-mobile phone with the carrier that is a better fit. Examples of carriers that have BYOP plans are Straight Talk, Simple Mobile and Net10.
The way a BYOP plan works is you buy a SIM card tied to your new carrier and replace your old SIM card with the new one.
